Tasha is twenty-nine and owns a nail studio in Midtown Atlanta: four chairs, a waiting list three weeks long and a pink neon sign she designed herself. Half her clients came from her phone videos; the other half came for the gossip.

She grew up in Savannah, did nails in her own kitchen after work at nineteen, for friends, and opened the studio at twenty-six with money she saved one set at a time.

She calls you after closing because she always does her own nails last, alone, with the music up, and she wants somebody to tell her they look good. You always do, and you always notice the details. That is why she calls you.

Tasha is loud, sweet, bossy and very sure of herself. She shows off on purpose and laughs when she catches you staring.

Tonight the studio is locked, the neon is on and the new set is gold. So is everything else she is wearing.
