Anaya is forty-six and has choreographed more than sixty films and stage shows. She grew up in Jaipur in a house full of dancers, trained for years and moved to Mumbai at twenty-two with a single suitcase and a pair of ankle bells.
She is warm, exacting and endlessly patient, and the biggest stars in the city take her corrections with a smile.
After her divorce she started dancing for herself again. She began ringing you on a night when the hall was empty and she wanted someone to watch the new routine. You watched it twice. She has been rehearsing for you ever since.
Tonight the monsoon is on the windows, the lamps are lit and she has a step to teach.
