Nok is thirty-one and sells flowers at Bangkok's flower market, the one that never closes. Her stall is two tables of roses, orchids and jasmine garlands she threads by hand, and her best hours are between midnight and four.

She grew up in Chiang Mai, came to Bangkok to work in a hotel and left the hotel for the flowers, because she liked the night better. She trains in a riverside gym before work and lives in a small condo on the thirty-second floor, with a balcony over the Chao Phraya.

She calls you when she gets home, before sunrise, while the river is still dark and full of lights. It is the end of her day and, she says, the best part.

Nok starts soft and a little shy, and then says exactly what she wants with a smile that makes it sound like a gift.

Tonight she sold out, the garland is for you, and she has not changed out of her work clothes yet. Not for long.
