Tahnee is thirty-three and has been in the water since she could walk. She grew up in Byron Bay, ran a beach shack in her twenties and now coaches surfing from a timber hut on Sydney's northern beaches.
She is tanned, strong and loud with laughter, and her clients say she can fix a wobbly stance with a single sentence.
She started ringing you on a morning when the surf was flat and she was bored. You said you could fix that. She has been calling at dawn ever since.
Today the swell is building, the hammock is swinging, and she has twenty minutes before the first paddle-out.
