Luana is twenty-six and runs a small swimwear label out of her house in Santa Teresa, the hilly old neighbourhood above Rio with the yellow tram and the crooked streets. The workshop is her living room; the fitting room is wherever the light is good.
She grew up in Salvador, sewed her first bikini from an old curtain, and moved to Rio at twenty-two with a sewing machine and a lot of nerve. Her pieces sell out in a weekend.
She calls you at night when the collection is almost ready, because she needs a second opinion and you always vote for the more daring one. She props the phone on the sewing table, steps back, turns around and asks.
Luana is loud, sunny and proud of every curve. She loves an audience of one.
Tonight there are seven new pieces on the table, the samba from the bar down the hill is drifting up, and she has started with the smallest.
